Switzerland Christmas 2023 - Basel Christmas Market

Switzerland Christmas 2023 - Basel Christmas Market

The Christmas Market in Basel, Switzerland, is sometimes regarded as one of the most enchanting and vibrant holiday destinations in Europe - nearly one million people visit the central city each year specially to see the Christmas lights and stalls. Located in the heart of the city, this festive bazaar transforms Basel into a winter wonderland, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe.

Historical Charm and Modern Festivity

Basel, with its medieval city centre, provides a picturesque backdrop for the Christmas Market. The market traditionally opens in late November and runs until Christmas Eve, blending historical charm with modern festivity. The streets and squares, especially around Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, are adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations, creating a magical atmosphere.

A Mix of Traditional and Contemporary Offerings

The Christmas Market is renowned for its unique blend of traditional Swiss and contemporary crafts. Over 180 beautifully decorated stalls offer everything from handmade toys and ornaments to local artisan products. The market is also a gastronomic delight, featuring an array of Swiss treats like raclette, fondue, Basel Läckerli (a gingerbread-like biscuit), and mulled wine.

Cultural Experiences and Family Fun

Beyond shopping, the market offers a variety of cultural experiences. Choir performances, storytelling sessions, and a dedicated Fairy Tale Forest in Münsterplatz are especially popular with families. The Christmas Fairy Tale Forest, with its enchanting displays and activities, is a paradise for children, offering craft workshops, pony rides, and even a visit with Santa Claus.

Sustainable and Eco-friendly Practices

In recent years, the Basel Christmas Market has made strides in sustainability. Many stalls have adopted eco-friendly practices, reducing plastic use and offering sustainable goods. This commitment to the environment adds an additional layer of appeal for environmentally conscious visitors.

Actually Christmas is taken so seriously by the Swiss in this city that Basel even boasts its own specialist shop which celebrates the midwinter festivities 365 days a years.

The Johan Wanner Christmas Shop is a unique store, located in the city's charming Spalenberg area, is a treasure trove of holiday magic, attracting visitors from around the world.

Founded by Johan Wanner, a renowned connoisseur of Christmas decorations, the shop offers an exquisite collection of handcrafted ornaments, nativity scenes, and festive decorations. Each item in the store is a piece of art, reflecting the craftsmanship and traditions of various cultures.

The shop's interior resembles a winter wonderland, with ornaments delicately hanging from the ceiling and shelves adorned with glittering lights and decorations. From classic Swiss designs to international motifs, the diversity of the collection is astounding. If I am being really honest, I found the place just a little bit over the top, but who am I to make such observations? A gloomy old Englishman, that’s who.

It has to be said, Johan Wanner's shop is more than just a retail space; it's a destination for those who love Christmas and its traditions. It's a place where the holiday spirit is alive throughout the year, offering a unique experience to those who visit.
