Somehow the word staycation never seems to do justice to a holiday in the West Country. It sounds rather second best, as though staying in England is something forced upon us instead of a choice. Yet anyone who has explored this remarkable corner of Britain knows exactly the opposite is true.

From Cornwall's golden beaches and Devon's dramatic coastline to the wild grandeur of Dartmoor, the rolling hills of Somerset and the breathtaking cliffs of Exmoor, the West Country is one of Britain's richest and most varied landscapes. It's a place where you can spend the morning walking a windswept coastal path, enjoy a superb lunch in a country pub and finish the day watching the sun sink into the Atlantic.

I've spent more than fifty years exploring and writing about this region, discovering everything from famous landmarks to hidden coves, forgotten villages and little-known footpaths. Along the way I've stayed in memorable hotels, eaten in wonderful restaurants and found countless places that rarely make it into the guidebooks.
