Exploring the Tranquil Charms of Alrø Island in Horsens Fjord, Denmark

Alrø Island lies in Horsens Fjord on Denmark's eastern Jutland coast, part of the Kystlandet region. Small, peaceful and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, it feels a world away from Denmark's better-known tourist destinations. We visited Alrø as part of our travels around Kystlandet, arriving by bicycle ferry from neighbouring Hjarnø, and discovered an island where coastal scenery, history and unusually good food come together.
The atmosphere is calm and you can experience beautiful nature and the most delicious food. The island is 7.7 square kilometres and you can walk, cycle or drive there. Alrø has been inhabited since the Stone Age and it is still possible to find stone age tools here. The island is particularly popular among nature and kite surfing enthusiasts.

To embark on your Alro Island adventure, make your way to Horsens, a charming Danish town on the eastern coast of Jutland. From there, a short ferry ride takes you to the island, where you'll be greeted by its gentle, rolling landscapes and welcoming locals. We took the The Alrø-Hjarnø bicycle ferry from the neighbouring island of Hjorno.

For a unique experience, visit one of the island's fish smokehouses, where you can sample the island's delectable smoked fish, a culinary tradition passed down through generations.

We enjoyed a truly wonderful lunch at lunch at Alrø Købmagergaard - where we were able to enjoy a locally reared bison burger and mouth-watering tapas. At Alrø Købmandsgaard, the bison meat is from the restaurants own herd farmed nearby on the island.

A Slower Side of Denmark
What struck me most about Alrø was how quickly the pace of life seemed to change. We had been travelling around Kystlandet, visiting beaches, towns and some of the region's better-known attractions, but Alrø felt different. There was no sense that we were being hurried towards the next sight or encouraged to tick another attraction off a list. Instead, the pleasure was simply in being there.
The island is small enough to explore without any great effort, and cycling is an ideal way of doing it. The roads are quiet and the landscape opens out around you, with fields, hedgerows and views across the waters of Horsens Fjord. Every so often you come across another reminder that this is a working rural community rather than a resort created for tourists.
That was particularly apparent when we stopped for food. Alrø Købmandsgaard is much more than somewhere to grab lunch. It has the feel of a traditional Danish meeting place, combining food, local produce and a distinctly informal atmosphere. And then there is the island's rather unexpected bison connection. Seeing locally reared bison appear on the menu was one of those slightly surreal travel experiences that makes a place memorable.
There is also something appealing about the fact that Alrø hasn't been polished into a conventional tourist destination. You don't come here for a long list of major attractions. You come for the landscape, the peace, the food and the chance to see another side of Denmark.
For us, that was the real attraction. Alrø wasn't somewhere we needed to conquer or fully understand in a few hours. It was somewhere to slow down, look around and enjoy. And in an increasingly busy world, there is something rather special about an island that still allows you to do exactly that.
