Jungfrau - To the Top of Europe by Train

The Jungfrau Railway in Switzerland presents a unique travel experience, offering a journey through the Swiss Alps to one of the highest points accessible by train in Europe.

Starting Point and Route Up The Jungfrau

The journey to Jungfraujoch, often referred to as the "Top of Europe," begins in Interlaken, situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. From Interlaken, passengers typically transfer to a train heading towards Kleine Scheidegg, a mountain pass which serves as the interchange station for the Jungfrau Railway.

The Engineering Feat

The Jungfrau Railway, completed in 1912, is a notable engineering achievement. It involves a 9.3-kilometre-long track, much of which runs through a tunnel inside the Eiger and Mönch mountains. This engineering feat was a significant undertaking at the time of its construction and remains an impressive example of mountain railway technology.

Stations and Scenic Views

Throughout the journey, the train makes brief stops at two stations, Eigerwand and Eismeer, both of which have windows carved into the mountain, offering views of the Alpine landscape. These stops allow passengers to glimpse the surrounding mountain peaks and glaciers.

Arrival at Jungfraujoch

Upon reaching Jungfraujoch station, located at an altitude of 3,454 metres, visitors find several attractions. This includes an observatory, an Ice Palace featuring ice sculptures, and various viewing platforms. The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, provides extensive views of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks.

We were there with an odd bunch of people - many of whom were dressed in Victorian costume. There were also a number of journalists on the trip and we all, perhaps, had a little too much wine with lunch. I had the worst headache I’ve ever had up at the top of the Jungfrau and coming down - which will teach me to drink alcohol at very high altitudes.

Besides the observatory and ice sculptures, Jungfraujoch hosts a range of activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, and hiking, depending on the season. There are also several restaurants and shops, including the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, a chocolate-themed exhibition.

Return Journey

The return journey on the Jungfrau Railway follows the same route back to Kleine Scheidegg and onward to Interlaken. This gives passengers another opportunity to view the Alpine landscape from a different perspective.
