The gardens at Le Vieux Logis - a hotel deeply integrated into the life of Trémolat

If some grand hotels feel like a soaring operatic aria, Le Vieux Logis is a masterfully composed piece of chamber music. Located some 45 miles downstream from the high cliffs of the upper Dordogne, this beautiful estate offers a landscape of horizontal peace. The honey-coloured stone buildings—a former 16th-century priory and a collection of old tobacco-drying barns—seem to have grown directly out of the lush water meadows.

The real delight of this place is found in the quiet details. It is the soothing sound of the ancient mill leat trickling through the grounds, the architectural precision of the boxwood gardens that resemble a green velvet tapestry in the sunshine, and the cosy interiors that smell faintly of woodsmoke and beeswax.

Unlike retreats that sit dreamily tucked away from society, Le Vieux Logis is deeply integrated into the life of Trémolat, a small, living, working community. The boundary between the hotel’s parkland and the surrounding village is beautifully blurred. During our stay, an English couple who have lived in France for 15 years told me it was simply "one of the best small hotels in the country."

The warmth of the place is a testament to its unique heritage. Years ago, the previous owner passed the property on to a small handful of core staff members. That decision injected an undeniable passion into the running of the hotel. Returning here felt like visiting family; the manageress, Estelle, welcomed me like an old friend, and her husband happens to be the exceptionally talented, Michelin-starred chef.

The wooded hills and sweeping valleys around Trémolat make it one of the prettiest pockets in all of southwest France. It is an idyllic base for a slow-paced holiday—whether you fancy e-biking from one historic village to the next or spending an afternoon canoeing down the lazy loops of the river.

Travel Planner's Note

Getting There & Staying Smart: The highly rural, unspoilt landscapes of central south-western France offer a perfect "staycation-style" getaway that is easily accessible. While flying into Limoges is incredibly efficient, these destinations are no more than a day's drive from the ferry terminal at Roscoff, making a classic road trip an exceptional option.
When organising travel logistics, utilising Holiday Extras for airport parking, hotels, and lounges can significantly cut costs—with travellers saving an average of £200 per trip by booking their parking arrangements well in advance. Find out more at HolidayExtras.com or via 0800 316 5678.
